One of our college student members is heavily into the music scene. He was quite taken by Lady Gaga and over fellowship commented, "Lady Gaga is a genius."
Of course, most adult members silently chortled. Hey, but she may be on to something!
At a recent concert in Philadelphia, Lady Gaga came onto the stage. We are all used to the standard pre-event admonishment to please turn off cell phones. But not Lady Gaga. She came on stage and asked every audience member to get their cell phones out and Tweet about where they are and what they are doing. Genius, indeed. She just asked her audience of 20,000 to Tweet her concert and got the word out to countless others.
What can the church learn from this? The church is pretty much stuck in the 1950s as far as communication goes. Most newsletters are still black and white and riddled with cheezy clip art. Most church web sites aren't used as more than a static brochure or an ineffective bulletin board -- even the well designed ones!
Logically, if we advertise (evangelize) like we are living in the 1950s, we are going to get 1950s results.
What if before a church service, when announcements are being made, the pastor asked everyone present to pull out their cell phones and send a tweet? Tell them you happen to be in church and are wondering how you might be able to pray for them today.
We at Redeemer are just wondering what might happen if the church entered the new milennia. Thanks, Lady Gaga.
